Special support for the RATLab at WPI (the Electric Guitar Innovation Lab and the Interactive Music Systems Lab)

the Burton ’84 Music Endowment

The purpose of this Fund is to serve WPI and its students by supporting the Music Division. Music Division faculty will identify and host one or more Musicians of Distinction (MoD) at WPI, whereby said musicians may teach and co-teach courses and seminars, give special lectures, and support ongoing music research projects. Funds are to be used to support this activity as determined solely by the full-time Music Division faculty with areas of specialization in Music Technology. Fund uses may include payment for teaching performed by the MoD, stipends for hands-on lab assistance and lectures by the MoD, or additional stipends to support accompanist, technicians, or any ancillary colleagues or services needed to support the efforts of the MoD under the advisement of the WPI Music Division faculty.

The full-time Music faculty of the WPI Music Division are charged to identify and invite one or more MoDs in areas of interest focused on the convergence of music and technology. The MoD may be an artist, practitioner, scholar, or other noteworthy individual with specialized foci on the convergence of music and technology through the lens of composition, performance, education, or other related fields of study.

Since 2023, the Burton '84 Endowment MoDs in residency at WPI have included luthier Rachel Rosenkrantz, music technologist Emily Hopkins, electronic and acoustic guitarist Andy Pitcher, and more.

Please note: our labs is infested with Lab Researchers and Technologists (Lab RATs), a highly-talented and appropriately-caffeinated group of students who work with me on various projects related to music technology. If you step on them, they will bite.
